The Central Oregon area consists of many diverse regions ranging from the city of Bend which is the regional economic center to small towns and cities such as Gilchrist and Culver and a range of communities in-between. The area also includes several destination resorts such as Pronghorn, Black Butte Ranch, and Sunriver. Proximity to Mt. Bachelor, plentiful golf courses, the Deschutes River, and the Cascade Lakes provide year-round recreation for visitors and locals. With a population of over 77,000, the City of Bend is the economic center of Central Oregon. Bend is located on the eastern edge of the Cascade Mountain range and is bisected by the Deschutes River. Vacationers enjoy the fine dining and shopping in Bend when visiting nearby Mt. Bachelor Resort. Bend's abundant recreational amenities, medical facilities, and wide range of employment options create a highly sought after quality of living.
The City of Redmond is located to the north of Bend and boasts a population of over 21,000 residents. Redmond is the location of Roberts Field, providing commercial passenger flights to and from the region. The Redmond Municipal Airport features flights from Horizon Air, United Express, Delta Connection, and Allegiant Air. Located on the west side of the City of Redmond, Eagle Crest Resort provides both vacation and full-time living with golf, tennis, sports centers, and 11 miles of paved trails.
The community of Terrebonne is located north of the city of Redmond and is home to Smith Rock State Park. The beautiful Cascade mountain range views and the proximity to Smith Rock and the Deschutes River make Terrebonne a popular residential area in Central Oregon.
The Crooked River Ranch development is located in northern Deschutes County and southern Jefferson County and is bordered by the Deschutes River to the west and the Crooked River to the east. Crooked River Ranch features affordable living combined with higher end properties on lots generally ranging from 1 acre to 5 acres in size. Community water is generally available for the smaller 1 acre lots. Among other amenities, Crooked River Ranch features a golf course and a year-round rv park.
Located on the Deschutes River northwest of the City of Bend, the community of Tumalo includes a small downtown area with retail establishments and dining surrounded by larger residential acreages and hobby farms. The Tumalo area is known for high-end small acreage residential properties with mountain views. Equestrian estates and hobby farms are common in the Tumalo area.
The City of Sisters is well known for the 1880's western style shopping, galleries, and restaurants. With a population of approximately 1,750 residents, Sisters provides small-town living with an artsy-feel in close proximity to recreational amenities. Black Butte Ranch is located near the city of Sisters and is home to golf, swimming, bicycling, and tennis. Black Butte Ranch is the first resort Portland area residents see when traveling to Central Oregon and the cabins, condominiums, and houses in Black Butte Ranch are a welcome relief after traveling over the mountain. Hoodoo Mountain Resort is also located nearby at Santiam Pass and provides relatively inexpensive skiing with a family fun emphasis.
Located on the banks of the crystal-clear Metolius River, Camp Sherman is a popular destination for fishermen and campers. Camp Sherman is home to 250 residents and features cabins and camping for vacationers.
East of the city of Bend, the community of Alfalfa provides affordable acreage properties with a wide variety of housing. Locals in Alfalfa love the privacy and views combined with the easy commute to Bend for employment and shopping.
LaPine is Oregon's newest city. While the City of LaPine borders Highway 97, most of the LaPine residential areas are located outside of the city limits. The LaPine area consists primarily of site-built and manufactured homes located on lots typically measuring about one acre. LaPine is known for affordable housing in close proximity to many recreational amenities, Mount Bachelor, the Cascade lakes, the Big Deschutes River, and the Little Deschutes River. The Deschutes National Forest surrounds the LaPine area providing camping, atv riding, and hunting for residents and visitors.
Sunriver is located between Bend and LaPine and is a full-service resort with golf, tennis, swimming, bike paths, retail shops, a marina, stables, and a nature center. Along with the proximity to Mt. Bachelor and the Deschutes River, Sunriver amenities draw visitors in both summer and winter. Nearby resorts associated with Sunriver include Crosswater and Caldera Springs which provide additional upscale resort housing.
South of LaPine, the community of Gilchrist was originally a company-owned mill town. The original mill houses were updated with vinyl siding, insulated windows, and metal roofing prior to offering the homes for sale to the public. Gilchrist has since become an affordable housing alternative and a popular vacation home community. The unique mountain cottage feel of Gilchrist and the close proximity to recreational amenities, forest lands, and the Cascade Lakes provide a relaxing get-away for property owners. Willamette Pass Ski Resort is located nearby and offers 7 alpine lifts, nordic trails, a tubing center, and a lodge with a restaurant and lounge.
Located in Jefferson County, the City of Madras is a diverse community with a mixture of manufacturing and agricultural employment. The lower elevation of 2,242 feet above sea level results in a much milder climate than the rest of Central Oregon. The Cities of Metolius and Culver provide small-town living between Madras and Redmond. The Cove Palisades State Park and Lake Billy Chinook are a popular year-round recreational destination for fishermen, campers, and water sports enthusiasts.
Located on the Crooked River, the Crook County seat is the City of Prineville. With a population of over 7,300 residents, Prineville is a medium-sized Central Oregon city. The beautiful rimrock surrounding the City of Prineville adds to the old-west feel of the community. The nearby Ochoco Mountains, Prineville Reservoir, and Ochoco Reservoir provide hunting, fishing, boating, and camping opportunities for Prineville residents. Prineville offers a wide range of housing from newer subdivisions to older victorian style homes. The city of Prineville is surrounded by affordable small acreage properties.
Between Prineville and the cities of Bend and Redmond lies the community of Powell Butte. Powell Butte features small acreage properties with views of the Cascade Mountains and Smith Rocks. Small acreage properties in the Powell Butte area commonly include custom built homes, irrigated hobby farms, and horse properties. Powell Butte is also home to new destination resorts including Pronghorn and Brasada Ranch.
